Early Cheerleaders

In the 1860s, students from Great Britain began to cheer and chant in unison for their favorite athletes at sporting events.

Soon that gesture of support crossed overseas to America.


There are over 4 million cheerleaders in 31 nations.

The United States has the most cheerleaders. 80% of Amercan schools have cheerleaders.


Cheerleaders are not recognized as athletes, but they can be injured or killed.

Concussions are the most common cheerleading injury.
